Mother’s Day is a special time to honor the wonderful mothers who do everything they can to keep their babies safe, happy and healthy. The mommy dogs in these stories have that maternal instinct and will do anything to protect their young, even if their children are not of the same species!
Whether mothers are biological, adopted or foster mothers, they deserve to be celebrated on Mother’s Day.
Here are six stories and videos of mommy dogs who saved their babies.
1. Injured Mommy Walks Two Miles and Saves Ten Puppies
An emaciated Greyhound dog wandered into the city of Vera, Spain one day with a broken leg. She was picked up by a concerned citizen and taken to a vet who noticed she was producing milk and bleeding, indicating she had recently given birth.
The vets repaired her injuries and named her Vera after the city where she was picked up. They knew she had puppies to care for, so they took Vera back to where she was found and let her go, hoping she would lead them to her puppies.
Vera stumbled on a two-mile walk and led her newfound friends to an abandoned car where they found her ten healthy puppies. Vera had cared for them on her own and then, relying on her new human rescuers, rescued them by giving them the help they needed.
All the puppies were rescued along with their mother and taken to a non-profit organization that worked to find them all forever homes. You can watch the original, full video here!
2. Mommy takes the plunge for puppies
A mother dog in Vietnam named Lu kept her puppies in her den under her human’s patio, but a sudden downpour caused water to spill into the hole and her puppies were on the verge of drowning.
Her human, Binh Dao Thi, helped scoop water from the den while Lu tried to pull water away with her paws. When enough water finally cleared up, Lu fearlessly plunged into the den and began taking her puppies out.
One of the puppies wasn’t breathing, but Thi did some quick compressions and the dog finally took a breath. The whole family was safe thanks to Lu’s maternal instinct. Hopefully she and her human will keep her puppies high and dry from now on.
3. Mom puts puppies in a pit to save them from the fire
A wildfire in Chile cornered a mother dog named Blackie and her two-week-old puppies, who had no way of escaping the blaze. Blackie had to act quickly to save her puppies, so she started digging.
She dug a deep hole under a metal container and put her nine puppies in it. Blackie managed to get away from the flames and rescuers were able to locate her puppies once the fire was out.
It took them an hour to rescue the puppies, but all nine were miraculously safe thanks to their quick-thinking mother. Several local residents, moved by the story, offered to adopt Blackie and her puppies, to ensure they had a loving home forever.
4. From piglet to puppy
When Roland Adam found an abandoned piglet on his property, he knew the little creature didn’t stand much chance of survival. Foxes would probably have eaten the poor thing overnight, so Adam brought the piglet to his dog, Katjinga, an eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback.
Katjinga had a litter of puppies that were ten months old at the time, so she was still in mommy dog mode. Katjinga immediately took the piglet, cleaned it like one of her own puppies and let it suckle.
The piglet was named Paulinchen and it survived and thrived thanks to adopted mother Katjinga.
5. Follow mom to the puppies
Betty Boop was abandoned and dumped in rural California. Every day she walked two miles to look for food to care for her ten puppies. Then she would walk two miles back to her babies so they could feed.
Concerned people started messaging Pinky Paws ResQ, who went to investigate. They found Betty Boop and locked her up so they could take her to the vet for treatment.
Her rescuers could see that she had recently given birth and they knew the puppies needed their mother. After they treated Betty Boop, they returned her to where they found her. They played puppy sounds from a telephone, hoping it would encourage her to lead them to her puppies.
She led them two miles inland to an abandoned ranch where her ten puppies were waiting. Thanks to this trusting mother, rescuers have found all the puppies and kept them safe. Betty Boop will never have to walk that far to help them again.
6. Cheetah Cub Gets New Mom
Amur leopards are very rare, with fewer than 60 left in the wild. So when a leopard mother who had eaten three of her previous litters gave birth, zookeepers in Russia thought it would be best to separate the newborn from her birth mother.
However, she still needed a mother. Fortunately, Tessa the dog, who already had four puppies, was up to the task. She took the cub as one of her own, leaving her nurse so she could grow big and strong.
In fact, she soon outgrew her adopted puppy siblings and thrived thanks to Tessa. Sometimes adopted moms are the best moms for the job.
