Phoenix doesn’t look like your average dog, but he doesn’t care. He is no different than any other puppy, but unfortunately many people don’t see it that way. His appearance often scares people and makes them look away. But he’s just a sweet dog who wants someone to love and understand him. The way he looks doesn’t stop him. So he’s ready to show the world what an incredible dog he really is.
This poor dog was left as a stray for at least a year. Unfortunately, people often saw him looking for food, but once they got a good look at his face, they just kept walking. No one would give him a chance simply because he didn’t look the way they used to. He had been called “creepy” and “horrific” far too often. But now there are a lot of people who like it, and they are absolutely right!
Phoenix was saved!
Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue in Oklahoma instantly fell in love with Phoenix. Someone who saw him eventually called the rescue service for help. When the staff heard about Phoenix’s unique appearance, they didn’t have to think twice. They were determined to save him.
When the rescue found Phoenix, they could see that he had been in someone’s past. Unfortunately, that probably means his previous family didn’t take care of him, and that’s how he ended up this way.
†He was skin and bones. You could see all his ribs,” said Carisa Ducharne of Skiatook Paws & Claws. †[He was] so inflamed that he couldn’t close his eyes. He had so much swelling and inflammation in his face.”
The rescue has no idea why Phoenix looks the way he does. When they found him, he wasn’t afraid of people at all. In fact, he was such a happy dog. His tail never stopped wagging and he always wanted to play and be loved. It was clear that whatever happened to him didn’t affect his loving nature.
Skiatook Paws & Claws posts regular updates about Phoenix’s incredible journey. He has been given a lot of love and many people have donated to help cover his medical costs.
He improves every day
Family Animal Medicine has worked hard to help Phoenix as much as possible. They’ve found that he most likely has an autoimmune disease, but they’re not sure which one yet. He is doing so much better now than when he arrived.
“He’s done nothing but get better every day,” Ducharne said. “I wouldn’t say this is intentional trauma, but neglect is also abuse, and he was neglected without a doubt.”
Many dog lovers have enlisted the help of getting more information about Phoenix. There are even several individuals who have expressed an interest in adopting him.
The rescue is great that so many people want to welcome Phoenix into their homes. However, they posted a message explaining that if Phoenix is ever put up for adoption, it probably won’t be long. They want to make sure he is completely healthy before he goes to a forever home.
Phoenix is grateful to see so many people willing to support him. The staff does everything they can to make his life as pleasant and exciting as possible. Sure enough, he seems as happy as can be! After a hard life, Phoenix can finally prove that true beauty comes from within.
